There are lots of natural ways that you can grow a healthy, organic garden. All you need to do is educate yourself about organic gardening, and take advantage of the tips available.
Involve your children in gardening. Gardening helps your children learn about biological processes and serves as a social activity that helps the family grow closer while eating healthier.
To be as efficient as possible in the garden, always have your tools handy. You can wear an apron or pants that have a lot of pockets, or use a big bucket or can. You should be able to do your garden work quickly if you keep a trowel, gloves, small pruning shears, and other handy devices close to you.
Have plastic bags on hand so that you may cover your muddy gardening shoes. You will be able to go in and out without having to keep taking your shoes on and off.
Make sure you don’t let your chores pile up when it comes to your garden Even if you’re to busy to focus on your garden’s needs each day, you could do small things that could prevent you from piling up work when you wish to work on your garden. If you put the dog outside, weed a few spots in the garden while your dog goes to the bathroom.
Be sure your new compost pile contains roughly the same proportion of dried and green plants. When you pull weeds from your garden, throw them in the compost. The same goes for vegetable trimmings and grass clippings. These are considered green materials. Dry materials, like sawdust, cut up wood pieces, cardboard, straw and shredded paper are good for your compost pile. Don’t include ashes, diseased plants, charcoal meat, or carnivorous animal waste.
Do you want to get rid of weeds in a natural way? You will need many layers of newspapers. Weeds can’t grow without sunlight. By covering them with a layer of newspaper, you are essentially suffocating the weeds due to a lack of light. Because newspapers decompose well with the passage of time, they make great additions to compost. You can cover the newspapers with mulch to make them look more attractive if you like!
If you are starting your seedlings out in small containers, you should use a layer of potting soil that is three times as deep as the size of a single seed. There are some seeds, however, that you should not cover at all, since they need sunlight to germinate. This is true of popular flowers like petunias and zinnias. If you’re not sure if your seeds need sunlight, you can find out online or through the seeds’ package.
Lightly ruffle your seeds by hand or with cardboard, twice daily in your organic garden. This sounds like total nonsense, but there is research suggesting that it does promote plant growth relative to unpetted plants.
Use alcohol to help control the slugs in your garden by fashioning a beer trap. Bury a canning jar so that the open mouth and the soil top are level. Keep the jar filled with beer, up to about an inch from the top. Beer attracts slugs and then they’ll get stuck in the jar.
In order to construct your raised beds, make use of untreated brick, stone, wood and other materials. If you choose to use wood to construct your bed, choose a species that is naturally resistant to rot and avoid treated wood entirely. Some good choices you might consider are locust, cedar, and cypress. Using untreated wood is especially important for veggie gardens, because chemicals from treated wood could leach into the soil, affecting your food. If you have some space treated wood, you can still use it, however, be sure to line it with some type of barrier like plastic sheeting.
Many people try to garden, but if you do not know what you are doing, you will not see the best results. It is important to put these organic tips to good use.
